Organization of Mapping Services on the Internet: Possible Solutions

1. Cartographers have long adhered to the view of the map as primarily a medium of communication (MacEachren 1995). Recently, influenced by ideas of scientific visualization and exploratory data analysis, they started to pay more attention to the role of the map as a tool to support visual thinking and decision making (MacEachren 1994, MacEachren and Kraak, 1997). To play this role effectively, the map needs two principal additions: interaction and dynamics.
